A couple of weeks ago we went to the beach to have our family pictures taken by Nina. She’s the face behind the lovely photos over at Blackbird Ink (and she took the photo that is my header). Since we were just over at Wind ’N’ Sea, I told The Hubby to take his surfboard so he could surf when we were through. He dropped us off at Birch Aquarium and headed over to the pier.
The kids and I had a great time! We had visited once before, but it’s been about a year and a half so The Boy didn’t remember it at all. It was for a birthday party then, which was fantastic if you’re looking for a fun birthday party idea. Anyway, it was nice to go and just play with the kiddos. We started off walking through the myriad of fish tanks.
To say The Boy was excited would be a vast understatement. There were so many different sea creatures to see. They have a seahorse exhibit right now that I thought was fascinating.
I learned all sorts of things that I never knew. They also had a number of tanks with seahorses of different ages. Some were born not long ago at all and are super tiny.
In the same room was a giant board game that we played, helping us learn more about the fragile state of seahorses and why many don’t make it to adulthood. There was also a little play area where the kids could take stuffed sea animals and move them around in different habitats to try to camouflage them. We spent some time outside learning about energy and seeing the shark tank.
While outside, I snapped some pictures of the amazing view from the aquarium.
Just before we left, there was a table set up with a number of different shark jaw bones that the kids could see and feel the teeth.
We had a great time and I hope it’s not too terribly long before we head back there again.
P.S. Museum Month is coming up in February. I can’t wait!
